The land of Return of the Shadow is truly an exciting place to visit and explore. However, exploring our rendition of the fourth age of Arda is only one piece in the long, rich history of Tolkien's Middle-Earth. In order to truly get the most out of the hard work put into the design and development of RotS' online world, one should have the benefit of other communities focusing on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Here we supply some links to those players interested in a more intimate understanding of the world they play in.

On the other hand, for those players who already have a sufficient knowledge of Tolkien literature, we provide some links and utilities to heighten your potential to excel in a MUD environment.

Tolkien Resources Utilities
  • Name Generators: Spitfire and Rinkworks

Great online tools for creating original character names suitable for RotS.

  • The Encyclopedia of Arda

Vast array of knowledge on the world of Arda and everything in it, from the dawn of time to the end of the Third Age. This site is really one of the most extensive collections of Tolkien information on the internet; it's a must see for fans and an oft-used reference for experts.

  • Tolkien Society

Life and works of the late Professor J.R.R. Tolkien C.B.E.

  • Internet Tolkien Book Society

Information on and forum for discussing all of Tolkien's literature. If you haven't gotten around to reading the books, shame on you!

  • Ardalambion

Tolkien was, by all accounts, a linguist. This site takes a deep, critical look at the languages developed by Tolkien for his mythical universe. Languages examined range from the well-understood and documented Quenya to the most elusive and unknown Khuzdul. This site promises hours of interesting information and intellectual stimulation for those players who love linguistics.

  • Jaba MUD Client

JMC is the most popular MUD client used by our players, rivaled only by the commercially available ZMud. JMC runs on Windows 98, 2000, XP and Vista. If you're using a supported version of Windows and are trying to play RotS through the awful telnet interface, you really need to download this client and give it a try. As a side note: we've been using this client for years and we can assure the security-minded folks out there that this software is free of malicious or intrusive code.

  • Powwow

For those of us not running a Windows-compatible operating system, powwow is the client of choice. Here you can download the source tarball which you can then compile and install on your Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris system. While the source has been known to be rather picky about its compilation, if you're comfortable debugging GCC error messages, it should compile fine on any *NIX like operating system. The current powwow development site can be found here.

  • RotS Pressar

Pressar is a set of aliases, variables and actions written to help you keep track of experience, spirit, alignment and enemy mobs. The set is designed for tintin++ based MUD clients (such as powwow and JMC, both available on this page.

  • Rots Class Designer Version 4

This is a native Windows application for designing your own class using RotS custom class creation system. This file is mainly available for legacy reasons and we strongly recommend that you use the much simpler online tool provided here. Version 3 is also still available for download.

  • The Online Rots Class Designer

This is an online version of the tool above, written in javascript. It's quite convenient but does require javascript support in your browser to operate. If you have javascript disabled for security reasons, you can be sure that our page does not foster any malicious programs or intrusive popups.

  • RMA Log Viewer

This viewer is a command-line utility that allows you to view RMA logs (as described on our logs page).

  • Log Viewer

A handy application that opens a log in a window that mimics client output.

  • RotS Builder

Written by Fingolfin, the RotS Builder is a local Windows application that allows Maiar and other builders to build their zones offline, then upload the results when they are online. This is perfect for playing mortal while thinking of some imaginative room descriptions. Truly a must-have for all RotS Builders.
